WISA Steunbeugel mindervalidentoiletten (Graduate project, BSc)
For my bachelor graduation I made a design for a support bracket for disabled toilet users. I did the project for the Dutch firm 'WISA' at the office at Arnhem. The goal was to make a concept which could be developed in detail by the firm's design team.
In short, the design process contained a few steps: the analysis phase, a concept phase, and a detailing phase. The process is finished with some recommandations according to the developed concept.
In the analysis phase, I did a stakeholder analysis (including multiple interviews), a competitor analysis, and an extensive literature study. These resulted into a design proposal, a long program of requirements, and five areas of improvement. In short the five main areas of improvement were:
-
Improved leverage points
-
More grip
-
Flush control in access for the toilet user
-
Adaptable to toilet user without dismounting
-
Lock of certain moving parts
Subsequently, I made a lot of sketches and small concepts suitable to the requirements and the five problem areas. After combining the strongest parts of the three main concepts into one final concept, I developed this redesign in more detail by i.a. strength and cost calculations. Also, the design have been adapted by conclusions drawn from a test model (see figure). I ended this phase with a 1:6 mock-up.
Due to non-disclosure agreements, I cannot present more in-depth results.
